A Rodent Was Spotted Eating Meat in This NYC Grocery Store

Meat prices are on the upswing lately, but some supermarket customers were in for an entirely different surprise on a recent trip to the store. A live mouse was caught on tape enjoying a hunk of meat at a Whole Foods deli counter in New York.

A shopper spotted the rodent at the Columbus Circle location in Manhattan, and they shared a video of the incident on TikTok on May 24. The mouse certainly had expensive taste—it's clearly snacking on Osso Bucco Veal, which costs about $22.99 a pound. (Related: This Is the Best Supermarket in America, New Survey Says)

A spokesperson for Whole Foods told Eat This, Not That! that the chain was taking the mouse situation "very seriously."

"We immediately removed and disposed of all products in the case, performed a deep cleaning, and brought in a third-party service for a thorough inspection," the spokesperson said. "The store diligently followed our detailed protocol in response and continues to work closely with our food safety team."

User @DefineBritt, who posted the video, said they didn't purchase anything from the store—and don't have plans to return. The viral video has now been viewed more than 1.7 million times.

Another TikTok user who claims they worked in the grocery industry for years commented that there are "rats in your local store" whether it's "high end or not." '"Sometimes, they come in the truck palettes," they added.

This wasn't the only reason Whole Foods made the news this week. The chain currently has more than 40 new locations in development in 13 states. Is yours on the list?
