Dr. Fauci Has This Urgent Message For All Americans

The coronavirus pandemic is not over, but we could all get back to normal faster if more people get vaccinated. That's particularly important as a new variant, dubbed Delta, is "more transmissible" and thus more dangerous to those who are not vaccinated (including young children). Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the President and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, appeared on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon last night to promote vaccines, and shared an important message for all Amercians. Read on for 5 essential pieces of advice, and to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You Have "Long" COVID and May Not Even Know It.

Dr. Fauci Said It's Important to Do This One Thing

Dr. Fauci said: "Everything we do is based on science and evidence and data. And right now, the major thrust of what we're doing is implementing the vaccine plan of getting people vaccinated, which has really been quite successful. The numbers of infections in this country are going down substantially related to the fact that we now have about 50 plus percent of the adult population is fully vaccinated. And about 64% of the population of adults have had at least one dose of a two dose regimen. We want to hit 70% of the adult population vaccinated by July 4th, several states about 14 states have already done that. So we're really continuing to emphasize the need and the importance to get vaccinated, not only for your own safety and health, but for that of your family, as well as the community in general."

Dr. Fauci Recently Warned of More Coming Variants

When asked about the Delta variant, which "is leading to spikes and hospitalizations in UK and Germany," Dr. Fauci, speaking during an interview with Conversations on Health Care with hosts Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter, confirmed that the vaccines available right now, "work quite well against the variants" including the B.1.617.2. "We know now from the study, from the Pfizer drug, at least that it's about 88% effective," he said. "So we're, we're in good shape with regard to the vaccines that we have." But he said: "We may not be so lucky the next time around that the variant that emerges is one that a vaccine is able to cover. It may be that it eludes the protection of the vaccine. So we've been fortunate thus far, but we can't count on being so fortunate forever, which means we've got to get the rest of the world vaccinated."

New York City has had 70% of its adults vaccinated. "That's really good news for New York," Dr. Fauci told Fallon. "I mean, they have gotten a good component of their people vaccinated. That means that they will be able to open and get things back to normal…So that's really the answer, California is doing the same thing today. So the people want to get rid of constraints. They want to get back to normal, to do things that we all love—get vaccinated, and it will get us there. That's the answer to all of it."

Dr. Fauci Said He'd Like to Get This Many People Vaccinated—so There's Not Another Surge

Dr. Fauci said the goal "is to get us to 70% of the adult population vaccinated by the 4th of July," he told Fallon. "But that doesn't mean we want to stop there. We want to keep going beyond the 4th of July and get more and more people vaccinated because when you get the overwhelming proportion of the population vaccinated, then there's no way that that virus is going to resurge again. I mean, that's the answer. It has been traditionally with other infections diseases, and we're seeing now every place that there has been an increase in the percentage of vaccine that has been a concomitant diminution and decrease in the number of infections. So we really want to go all the way. We don't want to stop at 75 or 80. We want to get as many people vaccinated as we possibly can. And that's what we're talking about."
