These States Are "Sitting Ducks" for Next Covid Outbreak, Expert Says

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the term "herd immunity" has been used often by experts such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the President and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. In short, the concept is that when a large portion of the community becomes immune to a virus, either via vaccination or infection, the whole community becomes protected. This is why President Joe Biden has made it his mission to get as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible, setting the goal of having 70 percent of the country with at least one vaccine in their arm by July 4. Now, a new expert warns that some states are in danger of another COVID-19 outbreak. Read on to find out which states are "sitting ducks" for the next COVID-19 outbreak—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You Had COVID And Should Tell Your Doctor.

There are 12 States to Worry About

During an interview with CNN's Chris Cuomo, National Institutes of Health Director Dr. Francis Collins, warned that unvaccinated states are in trouble. "There are 12 states that are already at 70%. I worry about the ones that are way below that, and they are sitting ducks for the next outbreak of Covid-19 — which shouldn't have to happen now," he said.

According to the New York Times, Alabama, Mississippi, Wyoming, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas, South Carolina, West Virginia, Idaho, Georgia have some of the lowest vaccination rates in the country, all with less than 53 percent of the total population vaccinated. The CDC published a report on Thursday that 63 percent percent of adults have received at least one Covid-19 vaccine dose.

"We have pockets of this country that have lower rates of vaccination," Dr. Rochelle Walensky also said, expressing concern this week. "I worry that this virus is an opportunist and that where we have low rates of vaccination are where we may see it again. And so really the issue now is to make sure we get to those communities as well."

Fauci added that he's "fairly certain" the national vaccination rate could likely prevent COVID outbreaks, but that he's still "concerned about are those states in which the level of vaccination is low, that you may continue to see higher levels of cases as you get into the summer."
