This Beloved Steakburger Chain Is Expanding to 33 States This Year

After a fantastic pandemic year, in which it opened its 400th location and increased systemwide sales by 21%, Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers plans on continuing the growth. Not only is the chain opening dozens of new locations and expanding to its 33rd state, but it's doing so with a brand new "restaurant of the future" design.

Now boasting over 400 restaurants nationwide, Freddy's is armed with four new multi-unit agreements that will result in a total of 29 new restaurants, according to QSR Magazine. Six of those restaurants opened in the first quarter of the year and included locations in Boise, Idaho; Memphis, Tenn.; and Pensacola, Fla. The chain plans to round out the year with a total of more than 50 new locations, with upcoming openings slated for El Paso, Texas, Durango, Colo.; Florence, S.C.; Streetsboro, Ohio; Lexington, Ky.; and Newton, Kan. A planned location in Linden, N.J. will mark Freddy's first entry into the state.

Some of the new restaurants will feature a brand new design that foregoes the dining room in favor of patio seating, double drive-thru lanes, walk-up windows, and parking stalls for easier curbside pickup. The first Freddy's location to boast the modern upgrades will open in Salina, Kan.

"This prototype is the latest in a variety of available options and will cater to the growing number of our on-the-go guests who are mobile-minded and benefit from the ease and convenience of this prototype's features," Freddy's CEO Chris Dull said in a statement. "This new restaurant design option will fit seamlessly with our existing drive-thru and mobile ordering capabilities."

In March, the 20-year-old chain underwent a change in ownership when it was purchased by the St; Louis–based private equity firm Thompson Street Capital Partners. The TSCP team said it would work with Freddy's leadership to continue its expansion through franchisees and increase efforts in marketing and technology rollout.
