Costco is Getting Rid of This Specific Member Perk

One by one pandemic rules have slowly become things of the past not just at Costco, but at other grocery stores, too. But the warehouse chain is taking another step forward in the journey back to "normal."

Rumors started swirling in June that one of the long-standing pandemic rules was coming to an end in July thanks to a post on Reddit from user @Downtown-Dance8132. They showed a sign posted on a corkboard with an official Costco logo. It said that the regular store hours would return, and the special operating hour would no longer be taking place. Costco has confirmed this rumor.

According to the Updates and Coronavirus Response page on Costco's website, "Senior Operating Hours will end and Costco warehouses will resume regular operating hours" on July 26.

The perk was set up in July 2020 for specific members.

Special Operating Hours lasted over a year and were only available to members over 60-years-old, those with disabilities, and those who are immunocompromised. It was set up in March right after the pandemic began in order to allow these members to bypass the huge lines and crowds that were forming as people wanted to get toilet paper and other quarantine supplies.

At first, the hour was only available twice a week. Then Costco extended it to three times a week, and then to Monday through Friday in May 2020, USA Today says.

Special operating hours were supposed to end in July 2020.

It took an entire year for the special operating hours at Costco to officially end. Last July it announced they would be reduced to two days a week. Then COVID-19 cases started spiking, so the warehouse chain decided to keep them as they were "until further notice."

Another pandemic rule quietly going away? Social distancing.

Samples and indoor seating are back, and masks aren't required for members who are vaccinated, but there is another pandemic safety rule Costco is pulling from warehouses.  Reddit user @YYCDavid recently posted a picture of the floor at their local Costco in Canada—and it is noticeably lacking the social distancing stickers. There's no word yet on whether or not this is making its way south to the U.S. just yet.
