Costco Just Issued This Serious Food Recall

On Friday, Costco issued a recall notice for a reported 862,000 pounds of a specialty grocery item that the manufacturer says Costco members and shoppers at other supermarkets nationwide may have purchased anytime in the past six months. One official recall advisory site suggests the product is responsible for 36 illnesses in 17 states. We've got the Costco recall details you need to know.

An August 27 memo to Costco members was dispatched to advise customers that a New Jersey-based Italian food brand, Fratelli Beretta, was voluntarily recalling packages of their Fratelli Beretta Uncured Antipasto in collaboration with the U.S Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS).

The USDA-FSIS reports that this recall includes double 12-ounce packages (24-ounce trays) of Fratelli Beretta uncured prosciutto, soppressata, Milano salami, and coppa. They state the products were produced between February 28, 2021 and August 15, 2021 and show best-by dates of August 27, 2021 through February 11, 2022.

USDA-FSIS says they have been working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and individual state health agencies, after a traceback investigation led authorities to believe that the three dozen Salmonella cases were caused by the Fratelli Beretta Uncured Antipasto meats.

Fratelli Beretta's memo to Costco members stated: "If you have any of this product remaining, do not consume the product. Please return it to your local Costco for a refund." They add that customers may call Fratelli Beretta USA at 1-866-918-8738.

It's important to note that the USDA-FSIS states: "These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide." However, with USA Today reporting such a large recalled quantity, it appears the Fratelli Beretta uncured meats may have been sold at other supermarket chains—not just Costco.
