Do American presidential elections stress you out? Seem to make your blood boil, even? A new study has found that political contests might have observable health effects. Specifically, the 2016 contest between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton may have raised the risk of abnormal heart rhythms in people with cardiovascular disease. In the study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association , researchers looked at 2,500 people with implanted cardiac devices (such as pacemakers) in North Carolina, a swing state in 2016 that saw a high number of negative ads, commercials, and campaign events with fiery rhetoric.
